crazy week

So as I sit here surfing the web and catching up on shows, I thought I do a post on my crazy week. I know I haven't made a post in a bit, but I think everyone can relate to a hectic end of the quarter scenario. Anyway, like I said my week was nothing short of overwhelming and overwhelmingly satisfying. This is a bit word heavy, but you know it can't be explain otherwise.

My design class has gone full steam ahead as we reach the end of the quarter. With three projects overlapping each other, I've been nothing but busy. I think design students can relate when I say that our teachers can be a big set back as far as coming up with concepts and feedback, as they sometimes can give misleading and confusing direction. Which is what my teacher did with our most recent assignment. The assignment was to come up with a clever ad series, consisting of 2 ads from one brand. I chose Oreo, as I thought it would be relevant with their 100th anniversary and an open ended brand. But coming up with a clever concept was extremely frustrating for me. I had emailed my teacher and confronted him in class several times with no real response.

And this assignment in particular was going to be judged by 3 people outside of school and we were to "compete" for a prestigious and fictitious award made up by our teacher. So the heat was on and with the lack of any real response and mixed signals from my teacher it pushed me to my breaking point. I basically gave up and as the days passed, it soon became the day before it was due. I had no choice, but to do the concepts I had thought were my best. I created the below ads. I was the only one to use my own vector art, others opted to photoshop, but that's not really my strong suit.

As each of my classmates presented their projects, I surely thought I wasn't going to win. Mine was the only illustrated one nor did I think my ideas were truly clever. Nonetheless, I won! I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least. It was kind of validating for me. I think it shows that I can really work under pressure and that my teacher isn't always right. Also to always follow my gut and my skills. I keep rethinking that moment, though the award wasn't really real, it was nice.

...where have I been? School, is where! Totally been enthralled into my design class that I just don't have much time to do anything else. It's also caused a new nuisance, migraines! It's a total pain, but my trusty excedrin has been my best friend.

In my last post I talked about how my design teacher's teaching style wasn't my thing, but he's actually been a complete help. While I thought his projects were a bit crazy, I now realize that there is a method to his madness. While other teachers allow the creative side of design to shine, he stresses the crazy things that most designers will probably be stuck with when they are first starting out. Which aren't so fun, but none of my classmates, including myself, have had any experience with this side of design. So all in all it's pretty helpful in the long run. Also my teacher told me that I was "Kickin' ass in class" so that's always a plus in my book, hah!

Holy macrole! Classes have been keeping me busy and kicking my butt. I thought I would have a medium workload for only having 3 days of classes, but man I was totally wrong! My design class has been pushing me to my limit with unrealistic projects. I'm going along with it because the next projects seem promising, but I'm not too keen on the teaching style. I'm sure most students have this problem. Anyway it's been snowing up a storm here! Yesterday within 3 hours we had already gotten about 3-4 inches. Insane. And school still isn't cancelled today, but I can't complain as I live within walking distance of school. Hah! Well here is a brief update of my week in pictures.

I thought it would be fun to take a look back at the photobooth pictures I took last year. It's also cool to see how you've progressed throughout the year, whether it be new style, new haircut, or new surroundings. So I decided to do just that and show you too!
I can't even begin to describe last year. I moved away, out of my parents house into an apartment with my boyfriend. My boyfriend I celebrated our two year anniversary in 2011. New haircuts, styles, jobs, friends, and school. Just a lot of change that I was really happy to make. So that's 2011 for me in a nutshell!

Like I said I would, I'm here to share a few of the photos I took in my film photography class last quarter. I think I'm going to split it up considering I have so many pictures I want to share. So here is the first batch, the first of many I hope!
An experimental tactic I used with my negatives that I think turned out pretty well. My teacher said she hadn't seen someone do something like it and was glad to see someone do something different.

Happy New Year! With that being said, hope everyone had a great holiday. I'm such a bad blogger. I can't ever remember to take photos or sit down and write. BUT! I do have a tinsy update with pictures. And more posts to come with some of my projects I did for my film photography class that I loved! My lack of blogging has to deal with 1) School 2) Holidays 3) Laziness. There you have it, but for 2012 my resolution is to take tons and tons of photos (& to drink more water). No matter where I am or who I'm with, snap a photo. This shouldn't be hard considering I have a fancy iphone now to take jazzy instagram photos with, which is super convenient.

Anyhow, the boyfriend and I went to the park today that looked over the city called Palisades Park. Super nice and kinda confusing to get to, but once we got there the sight was amazing!

It's been a long time since I've posted. I really have been trying to keep this up, but alas it just hasn't been working. Between work and school coming up I don't know what I'm going to do, no spare time at all! But I will post more pictures as I start taking more. I'm taking a film photography and a printmaking class this quarter and I plan on sharing all my projects and mishaps during it. I'm really excited for this quarter to start, just another step closer to get my degree. In other news it's my birthday Thursday! Turning the big 21, don't know how I feel about that. Just weird to think about. Getting older is weird, but it cannot be helped. Also! I got a tattoo! I'm super excited about it. I've been wanting one forever and I finally got it. The first of a few I'm sure. Sitting in the chair for two and a half hours wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Definitely a pain I've never felt before, I wouldn't even go to say it was a pain just a weird vibration burning sensation. Anyway here's a picture of my fresh tattoo...

My boyfriend and I aren't allowed to have cats at our apartment, which is a very sad thing considering we would love to own one, but our complex is crawling with kitties galore! Which is awesome! So the other day I happened to stumble upon one as I was coming home from work and he followed me right up to the door, even climbed our little stairs and almost fell down a few times. We gave him a little bit of tuna to keep him happy and he stuck around for awhile..

I've been such a bad blogger, I am slapping myself on the wrist metaphorically as I type this! I don't know how people can work and blog! As of right now, I'm swamped with work and tired as a little busy bee. I haven't been able to take many pictures as I would like, but I going to make time for it! Even if it is something random.

Anyways, I tried a new recipe by Joy of Joy the Baker. I love to bake anything, and I was trying to scrounge up a good recipe for something new to make and I thought, 'Hey, pretzels sounds mighty good!'. So I searched how to make soft pretzels and her site was one of the first to pop up. After browsing a bit I found how cute her blog was, not only are there fun and delicious recipes, but cute little random bits of her life. She also has videos that are super helpful that you can follow along with.

Here's my end result making pretzels!

Here's her recipe if you want to make them yourself:

1 tablespoon sugar
1 (1/4-oz) package active dry yeast (2 1/2 teaspoons)
3 3/4 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
1 large egg, lightly beaten
2 teaspoons pretzel salt or grill seasoning

1 heaping Tablespoon baking soda (add it to the boiling water just before throwing in the pretzel dough!)

Stir together sugar, yeast, and 1 1/2 cups lukewarm water (105 to 110°F) in a glass measuring cup, then let stand until foamy, about 5 minutes. (If mixture doesn’t foam, discard and start over with new yeast.)

Whisk together 3 1/2 cups flour and 1 tablespoon table salt in a large bowl. Add yeast mixture and stir with a wooden spoon until it forms a dough. Dust work surface with 1 tablespoon flour, then turn out dough and knead, gradually dusting with just enough additional flour to make a smooth sticky dough, about 8 minutes. (Dough needs to be somewhat sticky to facilitate rolling and forming into pretzels).

Return dough to bowl and cover bowl tightly with plastic wrap, then let dough rise in a draft-free place at warm room temperature until doubled in bulk, about 45 minutes. Turn out dough onto a clean work surface and cut into 8 equal pieces. Using your palms, roll 1 piece back and forth on a clean dry work surface into a rope about 24 inches long. If dough sticks to your hands, lightly dust them with flour. Twist dough into a pretzel shape. (Dough will retract as you form the pretzel.)

Transfer pretzel with your hands to an oiled baking sheet and form 7 more pretzels in same manner with remaining dough, spacing them 1 1/2 inches apart.

Let pretzels stand, uncovered, about 20 minutes. Meanwhile, put oven rack in upper third of oven and preheat oven to 425°F. Bring a wide 6-quart pot of water to a boil. Once boiling, add heaping tablespoon of baking soda. The baking soda will help the pretzels brown.

Using both hands, carefully add 2 (maybe 3) pretzels, 1 at a time, to boiling water and cook, turning over once with tongs, until pretzels are puffed and shape is set, about 3 minutes. Transfer parboiled pretzels to a rack to cool. Repeat with remaining 5 pretzels in 2 batches.

Line baking sheet with parchment paper and oil paper, then arrange pretzels on sheet. Brush pretzels lightly with some of egg and sprinkle with pretzel salt. Bake until golden brown and lightly crusted, about 35 minutes. Cool 15 minutes, then serve warm.

Cooks’ notes:
• Dough can be mixed and kneaded in a standing electric mixer fitted with dough hook.
• Pretzels are best the day they are made. (When they are kept overnight, salt may dissolve.)

I have been at my parent's house for the past couple of days for summer vacation and I've been working a ton, which leaves me insanely tired. And because of this I decided to shut down my etsy shop and just focus on doing me for a bit. I definitely am still going to be posting my photography, projects, and so forth on here :) So look out for all that.

So sorry for making you wait for so long, but wait no more! My cat print dress is done, it's rather big for me I think, my pattern was a little iffy, so that's probably what threw me off. Either way I think it came out pretty well for my first attempt at dress making. It definitely has a more retro feel to it with a bigger skirt.

I also got a wild inkling to try my hand at dress making once more. And I think this dress is really cute. The floral fabric I bought was on sale for 3 bucks, so I thought it was pretty worth it. All I used for a makeshift pattern was a tank top I had and the bottom I just pleated a few times. I think I definitely learned from my mistakes the first time around, helps if you just kind of go for it. I still have some way to go as far as dress making/sewing goes.

Welp, I hope you enjoyed. I really did making these. I love little crafts and what have you. It's nice to start something from scratch. Just a little fabric, a zipper, a sewing machine and a little bit of perseverance and patience.

So today out of pure boredom, I made a little charm bracelet. Just one charm, one incredibly unique charm that looks like a little moon rock! On a simple custom length chain, that I made with my own little hands. I'm thinking about giving it a double chain though for a little something extra! Let me know what you think! I'm really excited that I discover an enjoyment of this, definitely a fun thing to do. I've made a few bracelets in the past using hex nuts and some string, so this was a little different!

neglect

Sorry for neglecting this blog for this week, I honestly haven't done anything all week really. Was the last week of my summer course so summer has really begun for me now! Time to start searching for a job, blah. I did apply for a job that I'm crossing my fingers for, but I don't want to get my hopes up like I have in the past :/

And like my blog, I've neglected a project I had been working away at for awhile and I decided to pick it back up which is making this cute kitty cat dress! Here is a not so great photobooth picture, tomorrow I will post actual photos of this dress once I make a few more alterations! I promise. This is the first dress I've ever made and it was very fun, yet very frustrating at the same time. I cannot tell you how many times I just threw the whole thing down in frustration. I am no seamtress, so this was my first big sewing project. Like I said, still needs some improvements! But it's almost there! The sewing is pretty raw, but I have to learn by practice!

frustration

I've been searching for a job for a long while now, ever since I've moved here basically, and it seems that nobody is hiring. I'm extremely frustrated because I've had a steady job for the past three years. My etsy shop brings in small amounts very sparingly, which is okay, but I need something to keep me from depleting my saved up funds and keep me busy in general while generating some cash flow, nahmean?

Speaking of which today I went shopping (not really helping my case, ergh!) and got tons of makeup and beauty stuff that I really didn't need, but oh well. Hah. Some mac studio sculpt concealer and carbon eyeshadow, urban decay sin eyeshadow pencil, and nars deep throat blush. Things I've wanted to try for awhile now. So crazy how spendy makeup is nowadays. Blah.

The other day there was a storage unit sale in my area that my boyfriend and I went to, was so insanely fun. Never been to that type of thing before, but I managed to get a Pentax k1000 film camera with two lenses and leather bag including the manual and flash for 35 bucks, pretty much a steal. Super excited to shoot with that as well. So my spending has gotten away with me yet again.

It's been crazy hot over in my area. Having lived in the Pacific Northwest most of my life, I've been extremely blessed with not having too hot of summers. BUT since moving to the Inland Northwest, things have changed and over 80 degree days for a couple of days straight is a bit of a change for me. Been looking for a good water hole to swim in and me and my boyfriend are probably going to go to tomorrow as it will be hot yet again. I could only imagine what it must be like in other parts of the country and the world.

I got this dress at TJ Maxx and I don't really shop there often, but since moving here I love them. So many good prices on haircare and beauty stuff. I don't really care for their clothes, but I found this diamond in the rough and had to have it. I also love the Value Village here, where I found these t-strap wedges for 3.50. Yes, 3.50! I was super excited because they are a great height for me and the t-strap is adorable and versatile. I happened to stumble upon a Nordstrom Rack and oh my, I had to refrain myself. So many good pair of shoes for decent prices. Sigh, I need a job. Haha.

I'm wearing a TJ Maxx dress and belt, thrifted wedges and a fieldguided tote.

This last photo isn't really a fashion related photo, but I love it anyway. I love playing with the aperture, shutter speeds, and depth of field on my cameras. I'm really excited because in the fall I'm taking a film and digital photography class, I really want to learn more and more about photography especially film since I'm an avid film camera collector.

First off, I must say the lack of posting has been due to classes. I'm taking a summer class that is right smack dab in the middle of my day for the majority of the week so it's rather annoying, but it's only four weeks long. Then I get a real summer! Which I'm rather excited about...Anyway...

My friend Rachael was staying with me for a bit the past week and we had so much fun, moving away from all my friends has been very difficult for me so to see her was a pleasant spirit booster. Any who, we went around and did touristy things with my boyfriend. Taking pictures galore and walking around the downtown area of Spokane, was really nice out too which is pretty hit or miss here.

Some photos of me and my pops, wish I could see him in person to wish him a happy father's day. My relationship with my dad is amazing and I am so glad to have him as my father. All the times when I wanted a weird piercing or tattoo, as we all have had those mischievous teenage rebellion moments, he said no and for good reason. Or the times where I was just a knucklehead and didn't listen to him even though I should, which I now wish I had. At the time I didn't think he had my best interests at heart, but really he always has even if I never understood that. He's truly a person I admire and rely on.

I hope everyone is having a good holiday with their dads!

My week with my parents and my pup was just the thing I needed to cure my homesickness. Just lounging around and meeting up with old friends for coffee was a treat. My best friend, Rachael, came back with me and we've been exploring around my neighborhood taking tons of pictures, especially of all the cats that are around. So I can't wait to get my film developed! I'm in love with my new Minolta camera! We stumbled upon this beautiful field and couldn't resist to take pictures. Loved it because of the thunder storm clouds that were rolling in!

My boyfriend and I went to this huge antique show yesterday. Had so much fun going around and searching through stuff, but somehow I came away with nothing. There were so many pieces I wanted to get, but my wallet just couldn't allow it. Oh well. Saving up for vacation, home in less than a week! It's been so sunny out too! Yesterday it was at least 75, felt good!

I've been super crafty lately and when I saw the chiffon twist scarf when I was browsing the American Apparel website, I dearly wanted one of my own...except not for 14+ doll hairs! So I sent out to make my own, which in fact isn't that hard! All you need are sewing skills, fabric, wire and taadah! Bunny ears headband.

Just cut two strips of fabric at your desired length and width. I believe I did mine at 32x9 inches. Sew together and leave a hole. Turn inside out, measure wire, loop both ends, insert and sew the hole and that's it. Seriously so simple and there are tons of tutorials out there on the world wide web that are helpful!

Though mine is different because I didn't use chiffon, just regular old cotton fabric I bought at my local craft store and it still turned out great. Plus I like to make mine look more like a bow! Today I went for a walk on a not so glamorous day, but I managed. The whole past week it's been well into the 70's. It's been rather nice, but today it's back to the grey skies that I'm oh so use to. Either way, I went on a walkabout to just photograph some interesting things. I found this lovely little nook right across the street from where I live. I'm thinking this will be a new coveted spot where I can take outfit pictures. Lovely! Also I soon realized I was being watched!

I've been getting into photography lately and I'm always trying to compose better shots and what not. I shoot with a Nikon D3000 for digital and it's pretty user friendly, got to love it, but I'm definitely not the best photographer. That's why I tend to stick with film format, but unfortunately I don't know of any good processors in my area. Anyway, this is self portrait I took recently and thought it was worth sharing.

Once again my peoplewebs crocheted collar that I can't get enough of and this adorable dress I just got recently from Steffy's Pros and Cons. The camera is a Kodak Duaflex IV.

Also this weekend I went a little store crazy as I found an Ulta in my area just recently and a DSW right next door. Say bye-bye money. Here's my haul:

Above is a bag I got from DSW, I was a bit overwhelmed by the size of the store that I just stuck to the purses section. It looks very similar to the Mulberry Alexa bag, I would say. Before I explain my makeup haul, I really haven't updated my makeup routine/collection in such a long time so I felt like exploring a bit with new things. So from Ulta I got some Lorac Natural Foundation, which I tend to stick to powder for foundation but I rather like this and hear good things about it so we'll see. So the other day it was gorgeous outside and I decided to take a walk around parts I generally have never been before. I stumbled upon a grassy hill top and took some decent photos. I love the area that I live in because there are beautiful landscapes and tons of kitties! Seriously the house around the corner from my apartment has several cats that hang and roam about, it's so nice because my boyfriend and I can't get a cat though we desperately want one.

Going to Ulta today because I hear they have Butter London nail polish now? This is exciting because I just found the Ulta in my area, yay!

Sorry I've been so distant, but school has overrun my life (as seen below). I really want to start focusing on fashion more and do a lot more wiwt type of posts, but in the mean time I can share with you is one of my projects at school that is in the works currently. It's a cute cupcake editorial layout, that I'm rather proud of. This is my first work with InDesign, so it's all very new to me so I'm rather surprised I created something so cute. Still needs some tweaking, but you get the idea.

I'm wearing a cute crocheted peter pan collar by peoplewebs over a simple black tshirt from gap and a grey cardigan that I've had for ages. This is one of my many combinations of my school attire on most days.

Happy mother's day everyone! Hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday with their mom's. I wish mine didn't live so far away, but in a month I get to see her and the rest of my wonderful family.

I've always known about polyvore, but never had the time or will power to start creating cute little sets or collections of images. But! Once I heard about Orchid Grey's contest, I had to give it a shot. All you have to do is make a polyvore using Lulus.com images and pieces to create your spring to summer set for a chance to win a $100 gift certificate. I really enjoyed making mine and I think I'll make more. It's somewhat relaxing. Here's mine:

I've been going magazine crazy as of late and it's been so much fun flipping through mass amounts of beautiful layouts and design. And the beautiful photos of course. This binge of mine happens to happen at the most opportune of time as I am studying magazine layout and design in one of my classes. So it's sort of perfect. I love the cover of Material Girl, such a cute kitten! I haven't had a chance to go through Lula or Material Girl, but I'm super excited to! Even if Material Girl is in German.

I also stumbled upon a really cute online magazine called Cupcake Magazine. It features all sorts of cute photos and inspiration as well as yummy recipes! Take a look for yourself at their latest issue:

I've had the worst sore throat the past couple of days, it's such a downer. I had a wonderful home cooked meal, meatloaf!, and barely enjoyed it because of how scratchy and unbearable it was to go down. Though the weather was turning up, then slowly went back to snow the next morning, but what can you do?

I also got a cute loot bag, from Olivia over at youngcaptive. It's so darling and perfect. The scarf has a little knot pattern all over which is adorable and the boring bunting banner is now hanging up above my desk, it's all super cute and things I love.

Off to go cough and be sore, yay!

I wanted to update this with pictures from my Superheadz Wide and Slim camera, but I can't seem to find a good film processor in my area. As I've just moved here, it would seem that in a college town there would be at least one, 1-hour photo in the midst of this place, but alas, there is not. So I must wait til today to go cross out of my way to the next town to drop it off. So there it is, my post filled with pictures must wait a little bit longer, but in the meantime I've been trying my hand at sewing. Here's a sneak preview:

I got this shirt yesterday at a vintage store called Drop Yer Drawers. When my boyfriend and I pulled up to the area what we heard was an interesting mix of soulful to oldies music blasting from some speakers propped outside. The hippie who runs the place is playful man who has a taste from vintage clothes to random knick knacks and the sorts. The shorts on the other hand, I came across while riffling through the racks at Value Village. I'm on the fence about them though, I love the color, but the waist is one size too small (hence the title, mixed feelings). Either way, I think they'll stay in my closet for one more day.

I made a mix on 8tracks that may brighten your day, or mine since it's been snowing since I woke up. Walking to school in the snow is no fun this much I can attest to, I hope the weather turns around. Also added more goods to the etsy, check it out.

Thought I could share my outfit today because I'm in love with these shorts. I've been trying to find a pair while I'm out thrifting, but it just hasn't been my luck so I opted for these and they fit wonderfully. I suppose it's rude of me to have not introduce myself. My name is Amanda and I'm a twenty year old graphic design student. This blog is mainly a source of sharing my thoughts, photographs, and vintage finds. I hope this will be a bit more successful than blogs past. I've never been good a keeping one for very long, but I intend to keep this going. A little about me; I love a good read, may it be a good graphic novel, non-fiction, fiction, anything really. I really enjoy photography, I'm trying to get my head around all that it encompasses. I mainly like to fiddle around with my ever-so growing collection of film cameras. Right now I'm a full time student in the Pacific Northwest, so my schedule is a bit hetic, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Well, I guess that's me.

New designer from New Zealand, Sunday has created such a darling winter collection. I wish that I could just up and move to Australia, particularly New Zealand, they seem to have the cutest clothing. This make me want spring so much now. It's been snowing in my area for the past couple of days, it seems like spring is on hold for a little while longer.
